Atlanta Hawks

State Farm Arena
October 06, 2020 by Luke Anton

The 2019-20 Atlanta Hawks season can be defined by the fact that they were not the young surprise team that we hoped and advocated they would be.

What did we learn?

These Hawks were just too young to fully spread their wings and fly.

We do, however, heavily blame the beginning of the season John Collins 25-game PED suspension for not giving the Hawks a fair chance.  Collins is imperative to what the Hawks do.  You can’t exactly run a Trae Young and John Collins pick-and-roll without John Collins.

Speaking of Trae Young… Ice Trae, bombs away!  No really, we tried to tell you that Young pulls up from 30 feet no problem.  In fact, the further out, the better.  From 35 to 39 feet out, Ice Trae shot 43.5 percent!  Yes, you read that correctly.  Trae made 10-of-23 three-pointers from 35 to 39 feet from the hoop.  Fucking bombs, yo.

Trae Young averaged 29.6 points and 9.3 assists per game, numbers so good that the 21-year-old was a starter in the All-Star game in just his second year in the NBA.  That might seem like a stretch to some, but Ice Trae is definitely a star capable of stretching the limits of the game.  His shooting and passing prowess stresses opposing defenses to the max. Young finished with the fourth highest Usage Rate in the NBA and was 12th in Player Efficiency Rating.  Despite Young’s stats and accolades, the Hawks did not win many games, tying the Pistons for second fewest wins in the Eastern Conference.  Trae Young is going to need some help — especially on defense where he is still a liability.

Kevin Huerter posted almost identical numbers in 2019-20 as he did in 2018-19. No progression, but he dealt with a nagging shoulder injury for most of the season.  The Red Velvet still managed to shoot 38 percent from three.

In addition to the Collins suspension, it was the lottery-pick rookies here that really let us down.  De’Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish were not nearly as polished as we anticipated their games might be coming out of college.  But there were some moments!

Our baby Hawks were actually gaining some serious traction in the second half of the season.  Coach Lloyd Pierce even began sprinkling in starting lineups with all five of our youngin’s together.

The 5-man lineup of Young, Collins, Huerter, Hunter and Reddish that we raved about in our season preview played a total of 205 minutes together and finished with a +6.1 net rating and an Offensive Rating of 117.9.  For context, the Dallas Mavericks finished with the highest Offensive Rating in the NBA this season at 115.9.  For further context, out of all 5-man lineups that played at least 200 minutes together during the 2019-20 season, our baby Hawks finished with the fourth highest Offensive Rating.  Are your eyebrows raised yet!?

The seasoned veterans here also underwhelmed considerably.  It is rather perplexing why we were so bullish (hawkish?) in the preseason on Evan Turner, Alex Len, Chandler Parsons and Allen Crabbe.  All were traded except Parsons who played just five games all season.  De’Andre Bembry was somebody we actually enjoyed.  Except for Bembry’s 23.1 three-point percentage.  That we did not enjoy.

43-year-old Vince Carter had to log more than 20 minutes per game ten different times this season for the Hawks if that tells you anything.  VC, we love you and we miss you already!

What are the answers to our Season Preview Final Questions?

There WILL be growing pains, so are we a year too early on this hot Hawks take?  We would rather be early than late.  And shit, there is nothing but rookie deals and clear cap space ahead.  The future is so damn bright.

Yes, we were a year too early on this hot Hawks take.  The cap sheet here is still so clean.  The future is still so damn bright!

Would our preseason Over/Under prediction have hit?

We are wagering a substantial bag on OVER 32.5 wins (39.6% winning pct) and laughing all the way to the bank.

Also, +375 on the Hawks to make the playoffs?  YES PLEASE!

Hawks 2019-20 final record: (20-47)  29.8% winning pct

Nope, our preseason Over/Under prediction would not have hit.  And our bet for the Hawks to make the playoffs did not pan out either.  That’s okay, chances are almost certain we’ll double down next year.

What’s Next?

  • Continue to develop the young talent together and surround them with veterans that can contribute more than the sub-par supporting cast did this year.

  • Figure out how to incorporate Clint Capela who was acquired just before the trade deadline but never donned a Hawks jersey due to an ankle injury and the premature ending to the season.  The Trae Young and Capela pick-and-rolls certainly have some potential a la Harden to Capela.  The Swiss Bank should also offer some much needed rim protection.

  • The Hawks also traded for their old boy Dewayne Dedmon which means that we get more Dedmon “Call me” 3-point celebrations next year.

  • No suspension for John Collins, please!

Cleveland Cavaliers

Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse
October 05, 2020 by Luke Anton

The 2019-20 Cleveland Cavaliers season can be defined by “Slugs, not thugs!” — and by the fact that for the second straight year, the Cavs had a midseason coaching change.

After stunning players in a film session with a verbal suggestion that they were no longer playing “like a bunch of thugs,” Cavaliers coach John Beilein reached out individually to players tonight to insist he meant to use the word “slugs.” Story on ESPN: https://t.co/kqhRJ0qGjs

— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) January 9, 2020

What did we learn?

As expected, hiring a 66-year-old first time NBA head coach was not a good idea.

John Beilein was a venerated college coach at Michigan, but he was a laughingstock in Cleveland. Beilein’s original 5-year deal looked ridiculous from the jump. Now it looks downright delirious. We were surprised Beilein made it as far as the All-Star break. He resigned shortly thereafter.

Kevin Love was able to stay healthy and on the court for the most part this season. Love made 37.4 percent of his threes on 7 attempts per game, but he did not touch the same overall numbers as good-stats bad-team Minnesota Kevin Love:

  • 17.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game this season

  • 26.1 points and 12.5 rebounds in Minny back in 2013-14

Hard to believe that K-Love has been in Cleveland for 6 years now. He’s only got three more years and $90 million left on his max contract.

Woof.

That’s still the word used to describe the current state of this franchise.

It’s always winter in Cleveland for Cavs fans post-LeBron. The night is truly dark and full of terrors.

The light shining through the darkness for us is dat boi Collin Sexton and dat rook Kevin Porter Jr.

Early in the season, Collin Sexton had that crunch time lefty power dunk in Wendell Carter Jr.’s grill (see below, our fav highlight of the Cavs season). Young Bull dropped another lefty hammer on top of Isaac Bonga on a random Thursday night in January. Sexton can score and he plays hard. His passing and assist rate still needs a lot of work, bottom of the barrel compared to other point guards. We are required to also mention that Sexton’s advanced defensive numbers are atrocious.

Despite playing inconsistent minutes as a rookie, we noticed Kevin Porter Jr.’s tenacity and his innate propensity to just fucking go for it. Down by 44, KPJ’s not afraid to power dunk and flex on ‘em.

Sexton and KPJ bring the fire, and we’re here for it.

The fire is needed to make it through the night.

What are the answers to our Season Preview Final Questions?

In his first year as an NBA coach, can John Beilein improve the worst defense in the league?

The Cavs finished with the worst defense in the league for the second year in a row. However, despite being last in the NBA again, the Cavs defensive rating did improve from the worst rating in NBA history at 117.6 in 2018-19 to 114.8 this season.

What do the Cavs plan to do with their open cap space next summer when the free agent market is a barren wasteland?

The Cavs traded away three of their expiring contracts in Jordan Clarkson, John Henson and Brandon Knight. They also extended Cedi Osman at the beginning of the season, so only Tristan Thompson and Delly’s contracts are coming off the books.  It’s such a light free agent class that it’s probably for the best. Hell, Koby Altman might end up re-signing both Thompson and Delly. Run it back!

Would our preseason Over/Under prediction have hit?

We aren’t overthinking this one.  UNDER 24.5 wins.  (29.8% winning pct)

Cavs 2019-20 final record: (19-46)  29.2% winning pct

It would have been pretty close, but our preseason Over/Under prediction most likely would have hit.  With 17 games remaining, the Cavs would have had to win 6 more games to get to 25 wins to hit the Over, a 35% winning percentage.  As we know, it would have been in their best interest to lose those games.

What’s Next?

  • With a bottom-5 offense and the worst defense in the league, there is room for improvement here.

  • At #5 in the draft for a second straight year, a defensive-oriented player would be ideal. The experts seem to think USC’s Onyeka Okongwu fits the bill. Hopefully he’s still on the board.

  • Get last year’s #5 lottery pick Darius Garland to improve in any way possible. Garland finished last in the entire NBA in Real Plus-Minus, Win Shares and Value Over Replacement Player. In other words, several analytics showed him to be the worst player in The Association. Woof!

  • Find a new head coach? Just kidding! The Cavs are rolling with Mr. Interim J. B. Bickerstaff, who took over after Beilein’s departure and then signed an extension in March.

  • We hope Bickerstaff plays more of the BIG BIG lineup of Drummond, Kevin Love and Nance at the 3. (Somewhere, KOC is fantasizing about this gargantuan lineup at this very moment.)

  • Speaking of Drummond, do we think Big Penguin will opt into his $28.7 million player-option for next season? Yes. Yes, we do.

  • Unlock more of February Collin Sexton (48.3 percent from 3!) and make sure December Colin Sexton (11.1 percent from 3!) never surfaces again.
